Yakko's World...
Hello there! How are you? Short time no see! Anyway...I'm gonna help you out today...and give you something that your 6th Grade students are going to enjoy.
Yakko's World is from the cartoon series Animaniacs...and in the song...Yakko Warner sings the names of most of the nations of the world (but it's old so well and truly out of date). The video is a lot of fun, and my students really get into the song. Here's the HD version on youtube...
Now I use it for the first lesson of 6th Grade...Where Are You From? It's useful to help teach them the names of different countries, but also the sometimes subtle differences in the ways that Koreans sometimes pronounce country names (such as Russia).
Here's a basic rundown of what I do with it...
Week one...hand out a sheet with the lyrics on it (I'll put the lyrics at the end)..and read through it once with the students. Play the normal version, the fast version and finally the slow version...and practice.
Week two...play the normal version once...then review the first verse...then play the slow version and sing together.
The same routine continues..review a verse each week and practice.
Once we've gone through the entire song, we have a few lessons where they write down the lyrics again, but in Hangul so they can read it quickly when they sing along.
Now...I link the videos off at my 'burndog teacher' twitter address so that the kids can find them easily...and then I announce that any students who can sing the whole song without the lyrics sheet will win a prize (usually kangaroo and koala pencil cases from Australia) and I also announce that there will be three kids who will win the pencil case for putting in a special effort even if they can't remember the whole song.
That's all I do.
The kids go mental for it...practicing and practicing trying to win the prize. The best thing is that they practice at home, so their parents feel good about it all because they got some homework, and it seems difficult! The other good thing is that every year I have four or five kids who manage to sing the whole song without looking at the lyrics...and they get a real sense of achievement and pride. This year, when we started doing the song, a boy announced that his sister had won two years ago...so he needed to win as well! It made me laugh.
Here's the slow version of the song...followed by the lyrics.
Enjoy!!
